Ferrara Film Festival 2021
Ferrara
- Ferrara Film Festival 6 , 29 May – 6 June
- The Ferrara Film Festival, now in its sixth edition, runs from 29 May to 6 June. It is the film festival of the city of Ferrara, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and one of the fastest-growing film festivals in the world — after only five editions, the fastest-growing in Italy.
The Ferrara Film Festival is a global film competition that includes the Golden Dragon Awards ceremony inside one of Europe’s most beautiful castles: the Castello Estense in Ferrara. As usual, the programme includes European and world premieres, collateral film events, charity galas, a talk show and much more. Founded and directed by international producer, director and entertainment entrepreneur Maximilian Law, it is the first film festival in Italy to be held in person and in full safety.
The Ferrara Film Festival’s awards are called the Golden Dragons, recalling the legend of the dragon slain by Saint George (the patron saint of Ferrara). Each Golden Dragon award bears the inscription Presented by Fondazione Archivio Vittorio Cini. For each edition of the Ferrara Film Festival, 7 judges select the winners across all categories. Special lifetime-achievement awards are also dedicated and presented to leading figures of the film industry.
The festival’s organisation firmly believes in the “theatrical experience”, meaning the experience of watching a film in a cinema, and has therefore never considered holding an online edition.
The Ferrara Film Festival draws on prestigious partners such as the Comune di Ferrara, ASCOM, UNICEF Italia and the US Embassy in Italy. Another key element tied to the city of Ferrara is its partnership with Giovanni e Vittorio Alliata di Montereale and the Archivio Vittorio Cini.

Exhibition | Lyda Borelli, actress of stage and screen
Moscow, State Museum of Cinema
- Lyda Borelli – actress of stage and screen
- On 31 March the State Museum of Cinema in Moscow celebrated its anniversary, which this year fell on a Wednesday, the museum’s closing day. The following day, the museum, in collaboration with the Istituto per il Teatro e il Melodramma of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Moscow, opened the exhibition Lyda Borelli – actress of stage and screen, curated by Maria Ida Biggi and Marianna Zannoni. The exhibition tells the artistic story of one of the most fascinating Italian actresses of the early twentieth century. Specialists at the Istituto per il Teatro e il Melodramma, with the support of Lyda Borelli’s descendants, study the life and work of Lyda Borelli. This exhibition is the result of lengthy research that also led to the publication of the monograph Il Teatro di Lyda Borelli, edited by Maria Ida Biggi and Marianna Zannoni (Fratelli Alinari, Florence 2017). Material for the exhibition was provided by various Italian institutions: museums, theatres, libraries and archives.
- The exhibition Lyda Borelli – actress of stage and screen strengthens the partnership between the State Museum of Cinema in Moscow and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Moscow, which began a year earlier while preparing the exhibition Federico Fellini: il Centenario. The exhibition was presented by the director of the State Museum of Cinema in Moscow, Larisa Solonitsyna, and by the director of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Moscow, Daniela Rizzi. The director of the Istituto per il Teatro e il Melodramma at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Maria Ida Biggi, welcomed guests in a video message.
At the close of the presentation, the film La memoria dell’altro, starring Lyda Borelli and restored by the Cineteca Nazionale in Rome, was screened, with live musical accompaniment by pianist Filipp Čeltsov.
